We’ll discuss the types of driver’s licenses that are available and the steps you need to take to get one. Continue reading to learn about driver’s licenses in SC.
Types of South Carolina Driver’s Licenses
You can obtain non-commercial, commercial, and motorcycle driver’s licenses in South Carolina. We’ll discuss each in detail to help you determine which license you must apply for.
South Carolina Non-commercial Driver’s Licenses
Non-commercial driver’s licenses are for vehicles that are used for personal purposes. Three classes fall under the non-commercial category (not including licenses for motorcycles or mopeds).
Class D – this is the standard driver’s license in South Carolina. If you are a teenage driver, you’ll need to complete different driver’s license phases to obtain a full, unrestricted Class D SC driver’s license. This license is used to operate standard vehicles, such as SUVs, pickup trucks, and any other motor vehicle that weighs less than 26,000 lbs.
Class E – if your vehicle exceeds 26,000 lbs., you won’t be able to use a Class D driver’s license. You will need a Class E driver’s license. This license is for single vehicles with a weight rating exceeding 26,000 lbs., such as trucks and recreational vehicles (RVs) that are used for personal purposes.
Class F – this license is for motor vehicles that exceed 26,000 lbs. that you use for personal purposes. The same vehicles that require a Class E license are the same vehicles that are used for Class F licenses. The difference between a Class F and a Class E license is if you’re using one of the vehicles that require a Class E license to tow a trailer or another vehicle, you’ll need a Class F license.
Commercial Driver’s Licenses
You will need a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to operate a commercial vehicle.
Class A (CDL) – You’ll need a Class A CDL to operate a combination commercial vehicle (CMV) with a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of at least 26,000 lbs. The weight of the towed unit must exceed 10,000 lbs. With this CDL, you can operate CMVs that fall into Class B and Class CDL.
Class B (CDL) – not all CMVs are combination vehicles. Heavy straight vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) exceeding 26,000 lbs. require a Class B CDL. With this CDL, you can use Class B vehicles to tow a unit, but it must weigh less than 10,000 lbs.
Class C (CDL) – this commercial driver’s license is for commercial vehicles with a GVWR that does not exceed 26,000 lbs. and towing units less than 10,000 lbs. If you have a Class C CDL, you can also operate CMVs that transport hazardous materials in large quantities or carry at least 16 passengers including the driver.
Motorcycle and Moped Driver’s Licenses in South Carolina
You can also obtain a motorcycle or moped license in South Carolina. Here’s what you need to know.
Class G – this license allows you to operate mopeds with a motor of 50cc or less.
Class M – you must have a Class M license to operate a motorcycle in South Carolina. The motorcycles you can operate can have varying engine displacements that range from 250 to 750 ccs.
Although motorcycle licenses apply to all types of motorcycles, in South Carolina, you are NOT required to obtain a Class M license specifically to operate a motorcycle with three wheels or an automotive 3-wheel vehicle. Instead, you have the option to use any driver’s license class except for Class G.
South Carolina Driver’s License Requirements
To legally operate a vehicle in South Carolina, you must have an SC driver’s license unless any of the following applies:
- You’re a military member or dependent with a valid out-of-state license
- You’re a student at an SC school, college, or university and you have a valid out-of-state license
You must have a South Carolina driver’s license if:

- You are at least 18 years of age and visiting SC with a valid out-of-state driver’s license

- You ONLY operate registered off-highway vehicles and snowmobiles without accessing public roads (other than to cross the roads)
Applying for a South Carolina Driver’s License
South Carolina complies with the REAL ID Act of 2005, so they began requiring additional credentials. These additional credentials make SC driver’s licenses and identification cards more tamper-resistant and help prevent identity theft and fraud.
What Changes with a REAL ID Credential?
The REAL ID has the following 3 levels of security:
- Level 1 – you can see the new features
- Level 2 – you need a magnifying glass or ultraviolet (UV) light to see the new features
- Level 3 – only forensics specialists can see the new features
Other factors you should know about the SC REAL ID credentials is that your SC driver’s license appearance has changed, but your ID requirements and fees have NOT changed. You will not be required to replace your current SC driver’s license until it expires. You can’t revert to an old SC driver’s license once you have a new REAL ID credential license. We’ll discuss REAL IDs in more detail later in the article.
To apply for your Class D SC driver’s license, you must first have a learner’s permit. You can visit your local SC DMV branch and:
- Provide the required identification documents, such as the following:
- Name and date of birth (birth certificate, passport)
- Social Security number (social security card, military identification card, or dependent card)
- Verification of citizenship (birth certificate, passport, etc.)
- Proof of residency (current employment records, state or federal tax records, etc.) – you must have 2 documents that prove your SC residency.

You will not be required to pass the SC written exam if you’re from a country that has established a formal reciprocity agreement with SC. Be prepared to pay the $2 written exam fee and the $2.50 permit fee.
After you obtain your SC beginner permit and have it for at least 180 days, and pass the SC driving test, you are eligible to apply for your full Class D driver’s license.
The South Carolina Driving Test
You can either schedule your appointment for the behind-the-wheel skills test or take a walk-in test between the hours of 8:30 AM and 1:30 PM ONLY. During your road test, you will need to do the following:

- Be prepared to pass your vision test (again)
- Provide a properly titled, registered, insured, and safety-compliant vehicle
- Take and pass your SC road skills exam (driving test) – you are NOT required to take the driving exam if you’re from a country that has established a formal reciprocity agreement with South Carolina.
Be advised that you will be required to pay the $25 license fee. Once you complete these steps, you will be a licensed SC driver. Congratulations! Your new driver’s license will be valid for 8 years. Once your SC license expires after 8 years, you must renew it.
Some third-party programs are authorized to administer DMV tests, however, applicants need to keep in mind that although these programs are authorized, the SD DMV reserves the right to require its examiners to administer tests.
What Happens If I Fail the Exam?
Good question! If you fail the SC driving exam, the following will occur:
- On your 1st attempt, you must wait at least 2 days before reattempting the test
- On your 2nd attempt, you must wait at least 7 days before reattempting the test
- On your 3rd attempt or subsequent attempts, you must wait at least 30 days before the next attempt
Once you pass your SC driving test, your SC DMV examiner will inform you of when you will receive your new SC driver’s license.

- U.S. protectorate citizens
- Immigrants
- Asylees
- Refugees
- Any non-immigrant granted temporary entry into the U.S.
Certain SC DMV locations handle non-citizen SC driver’s licenses. As an international customer, you must follow the same application process as U.S. citizens including possibly obtaining an SC beginner permit, except for different documentation requirements. Some countries have a reciprocity agreement with SC.
The SC DMV provides an International Customer Checklist (Form MV-94) to download. This checklist explains the requirements for both immigrants and non-immigrants applying for a new SC driver’s license.
The expiration date of your new SC driver’s license expiration date depends on how long you’re authorized to be in the U.S. or the expiration date on your employment authorization document.

Does the REAL ID Act Impact the Residents of South Carolina?
The US Congress passed the REAL ID Act of 2005 due to the 9/11 Commissioner’s recommendation to standardize government-issued identifications, such as driver’s licenses. This federal law affects federal agencies and buildings and military bases. A REAL ID-compliant item, such as an SC driver’s license, is valid for no more than 8 years.
You can obtain a REAL ID driver’s license with a gold star or a standard SC license or ID with “Not for Federal Identification”. This driver’s license or identification card does NOT grant driving privileges.
South Carolina’s REAL ID Status
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security deemed SC as fully compliant with the REAL ID Act of 2005. Federal agencies can continue to accept all unexpired SC driver’s licenses and ID cards between now and May 6, 2025, for official purposes.
